Dental Implant Healing Stages Broken Down Week-By-Week
Key Takeaways
-
Days 1–3 (first 24–72 hours): Mild–moderate soreness, swelling (often peaks day 2–3), and a little bleeding/oozing. Stick to soft foods.
-
Days 4–14 (gum healing): The gum tissue seals and strengthens; stitches dissolve or are removed. Swelling and tenderness should ease.
-
Weeks 2–6 (early bone healing starts): The implant is generally stable, and the bone begins bonding to it. Most people feel close to normal; you can usually eat more normally.
-
Weeks 6–12 (bond strengthens + review): The bone–implant bond continues to strengthen. You’ll typically have a review with Myodental.
-
Months 3–6 (ready for final teeth): Many lower-jaw implants are ready around ~3 months; upper-jaw sites often take longer (around 4–6 months).
-
Final stage (restoration fit): The abutment and crown/bridge/attachment are fitted over a few visits, with bite/comfort adjustments and a maintenance plan.
-
If extra procedures are needed, bone grafts can add time (often an extra 3–6 months, depending on the type/size). Immediate implants can still follow a similar integration timeline—the temporary tooth is designed to protect healing.
If you’re researching dental implants, you’ll begin to quickly notice that the procedure unfolds over several months, with healing and osseointegration shaping much of this timeline. Dental implant healing occurs in stages, with most patients achieving a smooth, complication-free outcome (dental implants have a success rate of 95-98%).

Below, we’ve outlined what to expect at each healing stage, so you can understand what’s normal, when you can return to a regular diet, and when your implant will be ready to load the final crown. While some patients heal faster than others, the rate depends on bone quality, overall health, and the location of the implant site. Here’s a basic overview. Feel free to ask any questions. Overview of dental implant healing stages

Stage 1: Initial healing period
- The first 24-72 hours after placement
- The gum heals over the surgical site
- Your body begins the early repair process
- You’ll be on antibiotics
What’s normal to experience:
- Mild to moderate soreness
- Swelling (often peaks around day 2–3)
- Light bleeding/oozing for the first day
- Bruising (sometimes)
Instructions:
- Eat soft foods, chew away from the area
- Avoid smoking/vaping (very important)
- Gentle brushing; avoid disturbing the site
- Follow aftercare instructions, including mouthwash if prescribed. You may have to come back to Weybridge to see the dentist to ensure all is well.

Stage 2: Gum healing phase
- Days 4-14
- Gum tissue seals and strengthens
- Stitches either dissolve or are removed
What’s normal to experience:
- Swelling reduces
- Tenderness improves
- You may feel a “tight” sensation as the gum heals
Any increasing swelling, a bad taste, pus or a throbbing pain that worsens is not usual during this time and might indicate an infection. If this is the case, please get in touch with your implant dentist.
Stage 3: Early bone healing begins
- Weeks 2-6
- The implant is now stable
- Bone begins to bond to the implant surface
- The biological osseointegration process has begun
- Temporary tooth might be adjusted for comfort and to protect the implant
What’s normal to experience:
- You should feel mostly back to normal
Instructions:
- You can usually return to a more normal diet
- Avoid biting directly into very hard foods in the implant area until advised

Stage 4: Osseointegration strengthens
- Weeks 6-12
- The bone and implant bond strengthens
- Dentists assess your readiness for the next step
It’s time for your review visit, where we’ll check your gum health and bite. In most scenarios, particularly in lower jaw cases, we’ll start planning for your next step, taking scans and impressions for your final restoration.

Stage 5: Implant integration phase
- 3-6 months
- The implant is likely now well integrated
- It’s ready for the final crown or bridge
Dental implants around this time are usually ready for your final restoration. The lower jaws typically heal the fastest, being ready for restoration around the 3-month mark, with the upper jaws being ready around months 4-6 as the bone is softer. Dr Rifai will confirm your clinical readiness with imaging and stability checks.
Stage 6: The final restoration fitted
- The implant is fitted with the abutment and then a custom crown, bridge or denture attachment.
- During this time, you can expect a few visits for scans, impressions and fit appointments.
- We’ll check the bite, your comfort, and make any necessary adjustments.
- We’ll also provide you with aftercare advice and a maintenance plan.

Additional healing stages (if you require additional procedures)
If you need a bone graft
Bone grafts can delay the process slightly and add healing time. Depending on the size and type of the bone graft, we might recommend waiting an additional 3-6 months before placing the implant. In some situations, we can place the graft and the implant at the same time.
If you have an immediate implant
In some cases, where an implant and a temporary tooth are placed at the same time, you’ll still follow the same integration timeline for your final timeline. Your temporary tooth will be designed to withstand heavy biting forces to protect the healing process.
