Procedure steps

Step 1: Assessment and Digital Smile Design

Every bonding procedure begins with a detailed assessment, which is essentially a check-up, during which our dentists will examine your teeth, oral health, bite, and overall smile proportions to ensure that bonding is suitable and stable for you in the long term.

At our practice, we’ll take digital photographs and scans to plan and shape the contours of the bonded teeth. This step will allow us to digitally design your new smile and have it approved by you before we begin.

Step 2: Sculpting chairside. No anaesthetic. No drilling.

One of the biggest advantages of the composite bonding process is that it usually requires no drilling or anaesthesia.

Because the treatments build up the tooth rather than remove it, we can avoid drilling into otherwise healthy tooth structure.

However, in some cases, the surface can be lightly conditioned to improve the bond strength of composite resin, and this process typically causes no discomfort.

Step 3: Application of resin

Applied to the tooth directly in layers, each layer of composite resin is carefully shaped and sculpted by hand to match the natural anatomy of your smile.

Available in multiple shades and translucencies, our bonding can be blended seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. To achieve a natural-looking result here, though, is where artistic experience really matters.

Step 4: Curing and shaping

Once we achieve the desired shape, we’ll review the results with you to confirm you’re satisfied, then set it in place. If you are, we’ll use a specialised curing light to harden the composite within seconds.

Once it’s cured, we’ll refine the material to ensure it fits your bite, smoothing the edges and adjusting the contours for comfort and function.

Step 5: Polishing and final result

The final step involves polishing the bonded surface to a smooth, natural gloss that closely mimics natural tooth enamel, helping the tooth look and feel like part of your natural smile.
