If you’ve had a CBCT scan to assess your suitability for dental implant treatment and you’ve been told there isn’t enough bone in the upper jaw for dental implant treatment, then sinus lifts are typically the next best step forward.
Sinus augmentations build up bone beneath the sinus so the implant can be placed safely and in the correct position, helping to guarantee the long-term stability dental implants rely on.

After you lose a tooth, the bone in the jaw shrinks. In the upper back jaw, this poses a challenge for dental implant treatment. When bone is reduced, the sinus space can extend downwards, leaving insufficient bone height.
A sinus lift increases the amount of bone in the upper jaw, usually where the upper premolars and molars sit. It involves gently raising the thin lining of the sinus (the sinus membrane) and placing bone graft material underneath.
Over time, your body will form new bone in that space, creating a stronger foundation for your dental implant – and as dental implants need a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw to thrive, if you’ve been told you need a sinus lift, you most likely won’t be able to avoid one.
Read on for the types of sinus lifts.
A less invasive approach, typically used when only a small increase in bone height is needed. In some cases, the implant can be placed at the same appointment, depending on stability.
Used when more bone is required. A small access point is made at the side of the upper jaw to lift the sinus membrane. Implant placement may be done at the same time, depending on your individual case.
Typically, sinus lift treatments are carried out under local anaesthesia, with sedation options available if required. During the procedure, you should not feel pain, just pressure, and afterwards it’s normal to experience mild swelling and tenderness.
We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions, and most patients manage comfortably with standard pain relief and a few days of taking it slow.
In some situations, the dental implant can be placed at the same time as the sinus lift if there’s enough existing bone to confidently stabilise it. But if the bone is minimal, it’s safer to do the sinus lift first and allow the area to heal and mature, giving your implant the best chance at success.
We’ll advise the approach that gives you the most predictable long-term result.
