What is a dental bridge?

Have you been researching treatments to replace missing teeth? Have you come across dental bridges, but are you not really sure what they are or how they work?

A dental bridge is a treatment that quite literally bridges the gap between two missing teeth and can replace up to four missing teeth in a row.

Like dentures, they have been a reliable dental restoration for decades and offer patients a more affordable option to replace multiple gaps in their smile.

Types of dental bridges

There are more than one type of bridge to choose from. However, they all won’t be appropriate for your situation, and a dentist like Dr. Ali Rifai will typically showcase your options and make his recommendations.

How long do dental bridges last?

Every missing teeth patient we meet wants their restoration to last forever – and we can’t blame them. So, to answer the question “Is a dental bridge permanent?” the answer is no. The only treatment that comes close to being permanent is with dental implants.

Bridges, on the other hand, can last anywhere from 5 to 15 years, depending on the type of bridge used. The types of bridges which will last the longest are implant-supported bridges, which can last up to 30 years or more.

Before placing dental bridges

To replace missing teeth using a bridge, two healthy teeth are required on either side of the gap to support the prosthetic.

However, the prosthetic itself won’t be bonded to your teeth, but dental crowns, which can be seen as one downside to treatment. This is because otherwise healthy teeth must be filed down and replaced with crowns to provide long-term stability for your bridge.

But patients will require a dental consultation first to outline if you’re suitable for treatment and what the process will look like for your type of tooth loss.
