We can help make your fixed braces treatment more discreet
Fixed braces are great at what they do, but they have a lot of social stigma around them, which can cause some teens or adults to feel embarrassed to wear them. And we get it.
Orthodontic treatment is a very personal and private matter. Since much of the reason behind Invisalign’s success is its discreetness, we know that patients prefer braces that don’t stick or stand out. But clear aligners are not perfect for every orthodontic case, so don’t worry.
Modern fixed braces come in subtle options, such as lingual braces that sit behind teeth and clear braces (ceramic) that use tooth-coloured brackets and wires instead of silver.
Expected timeframe: Most treatments take 12–24 months, with some simpler cases potentially shorter (around 3–6 months).

Fixed brace colours
One way to make your braces treatment more fun and to embrace their obviousness is to opt for coloured braces, which use coloured rather than elastic bands around the brace’s brackets.
You won’t be stuck with one colour for your entire treatment either; patients can change the colour of their elastic bands at each review appointment and have over 30 colours to explore.
Some patients opt for one single colour, but patients can experience a different combination of bands; for example, you could pick the colours of your favourite football team or even change them depending on the time of year.
Remember that you’ll wear your chosen colours for two months.
Fixed braces are a reliable option for crowded/crooked teeth, larger gaps, protruding/overlapping teeth, and bite problems (overbite/underbite/crossbite), for teens and adults.
Guide to braces
How long do fixed braces last?
The length of treatment truly depends on your condition and the complexity of your bite. The less severe your issue, the faster treatment will take. Treatment can be as little as 3-6 months, with most cases being 12-24 months.
How much do fixed braces cost?
The average cost of braces in the UK ranges from £1,500 to £5,000, depending on why you need braces and how long you’ll need to wear them. See our fees. Patients may also face additional costs like check-up fees, consultation fees, or retainers after treatment, so it’s essential to confirm with the practice what’s included in the price.
Are braces available on the NHS?
Braces are redeemable via the NHS for patients under 18 with a clear clinical need. Typically, the type of braces offered is standard, traditional metal. Waiting lists might apply.
What is better, fixed braces or Invisalign?
Braces and Invisalign each have their own braces; neither is better than the other—and it all boils down to perspective. For patients who hate the idea of fixed metal braces, clear and invisible removable aligners will always be the preferred option. They are both effective and proven to straighten a wide range of bite conditions—and they both cost relatively the same. So, the choice often comes down to the type of malocclusion or bite problem you suffer from and which orthodontic appliance will be recommended to straighten your teeth faster.
Should you wait to straighten your teeth?
While the prime time to straighten your teeth is while your jaws and teeth are still developing, it’s not impossible to straighten them later in life. However, even with that said, you should follow the advice of a dentist on when the optimal time is for your condition. For example, we use orthodontic appliances as early as age 6 as early intervention work to help children avoid the need for braces later down the line.
Do fixed braces hurt?
After fitting and adjustment appointments for your fixed braces at our Weybridge practice, you may feel mild discomfort or soreness for a few days. This can easily be treated by taking over-the-counter pain relievers and should fade away quite quickly.
Do I need to avoid certain foods while wearing fixed braces?
While you should still be able to eat most of your favourite foods during treatment, there are a few things that can damage and dislodge your brackets. As such, we recommend avoiding things like chewy sweets, chewing gum, crunchy foods like hard fruit and vegetables unless it is cut into bite size pieces, fizzy drinks and fruit juices.
How can I care for my teeth while wearing fixed braces?
Brush your teeth at least three times a day, after meals to prevent food or plaque build-up around your braces and use a fluoride mouthwash daily. We also recommend using a spiral toothbrush to thoroughly clean in between brackets, to get to the parts a regular toothbrush can’t reach.
What do I do if my fixed brace breaks?
If your brace breaks, call us for an appointment at MyoDental Weybridge as soon as possible. Don’t wait for your next routine appointment, as the breakage may slow your treatment, or may result in damage to your teeth.
