What are ceramic braces, and how do they work?

Perfect for children and adults alike

Ceramic braces, also referred to as clear braces or white braces, consist of tooth-coloured, clear brackets that are attached to teeth with a wire running through them. Throughout your treatment journey, the wire will be tightened gradually to guide the teeth into their final position.

However, please note that the wire thickness will gradually increase throughout the treatment as the teeth move into their proper positions.

They’re a clear alternative to metal braces

The treatment is very similar to metal fixed braces, but the clear difference here is that the brackets and wires used are clear, hence why they’re referred to as clear braces, which allow patients with mild, moderate and even complex bite conditions to take a more subtle approach to straightening their teeth.

Braces before and after

Dr Michael Marshall and Dr Ali Rifai have straightened 1000s of smiles, making them one of the best providers in Surrey.

What treatment will look like

Once your ceramic braces are fitted, our dentists typically see you every 8-12 weeks to monitor your progress and adjust the wire as needed.

After every tightening session, it’s normal to experience some discomfort as the teeth move into their next position. This typically subsides over the next few days.

The treatment duration for ceramic braces varies by case. On average, a course of ceramic braces takes 12 to 24 months, but if you have a mild or moderate case, it may take much less time for the teeth to be corrected.

At the end of your treatment, when your ceramic braces come off, you’ll be required to wear a retainer daily to maintain results.

This will involve wearing an invisible, removable appliance to keep your new teeth in their new positions. However, if you prefer, we can also fit a fixed retainer to ensure compliance, which will typically sit behind your teeth.
